Local Tips for Visitors

Getting Around

  • Public transportation in Amsterdam is excellent and includes trams, buses, metro, and ferries
  • Consider renting a bike – it's the most authentic way to experience the city
  • The city center is very walkable, with most attractions within a 30-minute walk of each other
  • Purchase a GVB multi-day ticket or Amsterdam City Card for unlimited public transport

Local Etiquette

  • Always use designated bike lanes and be aware of cyclists when walking
  • Most Dutch people speak excellent English, so language is rarely a barrier
  • Tipping is appreciated but not required – 5-10% for good service is normal
  • Cannabis is tolerated in designated coffee shops only, not in public spaces

Food & Drink

  • Try traditional Dutch foods like bitterballen, stroopwafels, and poffertjes
  • Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table) is a colonial influence and local favorite
